The Volkswagen Golf Wagon: A fun to drive, full size family vehicle.

Based on an extended platform of the 2009 and 2013 World Car of the Year, the Volkswagen Golf Wagon is an inspiring and versatile vehicle. Yeah, I know what you’re thinking – a wagon? Who drives wagons nowadays? Well believe me when I say this wagon is a very cool car. In a segment of the market dominated by small CUVs, the Golf Wagon, like all VWs, sets itself apart from the competition by means of drivability. Take one for a spin and you’ll quickly notice how connected to the road this car feels and how responsive both the steering and brakes are. The sporty driving dynamics and overall performance of the Golf Wagon really make it an exciting ride.

[Cargo space with rear seats up.] [Cargo space with rear seats folded down.]

Not only is this “stretch Golf” a lot of fun on the road, it provides ample cargo room for the average family. With the rear seats folded down, there’s approximately 1,900 litres of rear cargo space. That’s easily enough room to fit that new desk you picked up at Staples, or the fresh vanity you just purchased at IKEA. Just for a quick comparison, the Kia Soul offers around 1,500 litres of space and the Chevrolet Orlando has about 1,600 litres. Even with the rear seats in the upright position, the Golf Wagon’s trunk offers plenty of space for four sets of golf clubs, your dogs or your children’s strollers. So whether you’re heading to the beach for a day trip with the family, or up to the cottage for a week, there will surely be enough room for all of your belongings. You’ll probably even have enough left over space to buy a new inflatable lounge chair on the way!

Two distinct engines are available in the Golf Wagon. It comes standard with VW’s 2.5L 5-cylinder gasoline powered motor, which provides sufficient power and promises to be reliable, and a 2.0L turbo diesel, or TDI engine is offered for a $2,800 premium. Volkswagen’s 2.0L TDI engine is respected industry wide for it’s durability and because it delivers extremely impressive fuel economy – it sips 4.6L/100km on the highway. This clean diesel engine also puts out a glorious 236 lb-ft of torque between 1,750 and 2,500 rpm. That’s so much low-end power that you’ll want to get behind the wheel and take off as often as possible – and you won’t empty your wallet at the pumps for all of that driving pleasure.

There are a number of different transmissions available that complete the powertrain in the Golf Wagon. A 5 speed manual and a 6 speed automatic with tiptronic are offered with the gasoline engine, and a 6 speed manual and a 6 speed DSG automatic are your options with the TDI engine. I personally enjoy shifting gears the old fashioned way, but the direct-shift-gearbox changes gears so quickly and flawlessly that it is truly worth the extra $1,400 for the majority of consumers.

Some of the cool stock features on the Golf Wagon include an auxiliary input so that you can simply play music off of your iPod or phone, black roof rails for easy installation of a bicycle or ski/snowboard rack, power adjustable and heated exterior mirrors, an in-dash CD player with an awesome 8 speaker sound system, and a remote central locking system. Optional on the Golf Wagon are heated seats, a huge panoramic power sunroof, Bluetooth phone connectivity, a multifunction, leather wrapped steering wheel, 17” alloy wheels, dual zone climate control, leather seats and navigation.

As primarily a family vehicle, Volkswagen made sure that safety came standard on the Golf Wagon. With electronic stability control, front, side and side curtain airbags, a locking differential and disc brakes all around with both hydraulic and electronic braking assist, you and your passengers are well protected on the road.

Finally, as it is arguably the best looking wagon on the market – most certainly in its price bracket, the Volkswagen Golf Wagon should be on the short list for every consumer looking for a fun to drive, versatile, fuel efficient, and safe family vehicle.
